What we cover

Driveways we can help with

Resin bound

A smooth, permeable finish of stone bound in clear resin, laid on a proper base.

Block paving

Concrete or clay blocks in a pattern, which can be lifted and relaid for repairs.

Tarmac

A hard-wearing, lower cost surface, often used for larger drives.

Gravel

The simplest permeable option, with edging to hold it in place.

Imprinted concrete

Concrete stamped with a pattern, usually needing drainage to a permeable area.

Dropped kerbs

Most councils require an approved application and contractor to lower the kerb for a new driveway.

In Shropshire

What to know about driveways in Shropshire

Planning rules and drainage matter more than most people expect.

The 5 square metre rule

Paving more than 5 square metres of a front garden needs planning permission unless the surface is permeable or drains to a permeable area such as a lawn or border. GOV.UK guidance.

Near the Severn and the Teme

Parts of Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth's Low Town, Ironbridge and Ludlow sit by rivers with a history of flooding. Good drainage under and around a new drive matters there.

Conservation areas

In some Article 4 areas in Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth, and in the Ironbridge Gorge, hard surfaces at the front of a house can need planning permission. Check with the council first.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

Not if the surface is permeable or drains to a permeable area within your garden, or it is under 5 square metres. Otherwise, paving a front garden needs planning permission. A dropped kerb needs separate approval from the council.

Which driveway surface is best?

It depends on budget, looks and drainage. Resin bound and block paving can both be permeable; tarmac and concrete usually need drainage to a lawn or soakaway.

Does it cost anything to use Shropshire Quotes?
