What we cover

Solar systems we can help with

Solar panels (PV)

Panels on your roof that turn daylight into electricity for your home, with any spare exported to the grid.

Solar and a battery

A home battery stores daytime solar for the evening, so you use more of what you generate.

Batteries for existing panels

Add a battery to panels you already have. Retrofit batteries have qualified for 0% VAT since February 2024.

What to know about solar in Shropshire

Tax, planning and export payments, all of which changed recently.

0% VAT until 31 March 2027

Solar panels and batteries supplied and installed in your home carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027 the rate goes back to 5%. HMRC guidance.

Planning rules changed in August 2026

Roof panels on most houses do not need planning permission. In a conservation area they cannot go on a wall or roof facing the road without permission, and a listed building always needs consent. In the Ironbridge Gorge an Article 4 Direction also covers solar panels.

Paid for what you export

Under the Smart Export Guarantee, electricity suppliers pay you for solar power you send to the grid. You need an MCS certified installation to qualify.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Usually not on a house roof. You do in a conservation area if the panels would go on a wall or roof facing the road, and a listed building needs listed building consent. Check with Shropshire Council or Telford & Wrekin Council if you are unsure.

Is there VAT on solar panels?

Not until 31 March 2027: solar panels and batteries installed in your home carry 0% VAT. From 1 April 2027 the rate is 5%.

Will I be paid for the electricity I export?

Yes, through the Smart Export Guarantee, if your installation is MCS certified. Rates vary by electricity supplier, so compare them.

Does it cost anything to use Shropshire Quotes?

No. It is free for homeowners. Installers pay us for introductions.

We cover Shrewsbury, Telford, Oswestry, Ludlow, Bridgnorth, Welshpool, Market Drayton and Church Stretton, and the villages in between.
